The idiocy starts to ramp up

OK, so here we are in a financial calamity. There is certainly room for things to get much worse - just wait 'till next year! But meanwhile, TPTB are starting to make some odd decisions.

Here's one: you cannot schedule a furlogh day to overlap with "travel". Example: you plan to fly to Buffalo (hey? why not?) on a Sunday to attend a professional meeting on the Monday & Tuesday, and then fly home on the Wednesday. If you teach a MW class, you stand to miss two classes, in addition to missed classes on furlough days. Now, some faculty had planned to take a furlough on the Wednesday, so as to reduce the net impact on the students, but now this is disallowed.

Here's my gripe: you're actually only travelling on the Wednesday (in my example): on Monday and Tuesday you're WORKING, people! How is this not obvious???

It's one more example of how research is under-valued/under-appreciated at SJSU and in the CSU, and it sucks. We really need to think about suspending the "need" for research during these tough times. How are new faculty supposed to thrive in any sense in this situation? How can we expect them to stay? How can we expect to attract new faculty?
